about

Zhiwaling Heritage was built over five years by Bhutanese master craftsmen who hand-carved its timber frames, painted its traditional motifs, and set its slate masonry using techniques passed down through generations. The property itself serves as a living expression of Zorig Chusum—the 13 Traditional Arts and Crafts of Bhutan. Rather than viewing these crafts behind glass, guests can work directly alongside local artisans and young apprentices. Zhiwaling collaborates closely with local Zorig Chusum institutes and craft schools across the valley, supporting student training and traditional workshops. Sessions can be arranged on the lodge grounds, or our team can arrange visits to local training schools for guests wishing to see students practicing their discipline in the classroom.

Natural Plant Dyeing (Thazo) & Craft School Visits

Work alongside local weavers on the lodge grounds to learn how raw silk and cotton threads are colored using native plants, madder root, bark, and minerals gathered from the Paro Valley. For those interested in deeper study, we can arrange guided visits to nearby craft schools to observe students learning traditional weaving and natural dye preparation firsthand.
