At Zhiwaling, you are never greeted by hospitality that has been staged for a visitor. You are received by the very people who live its traditions every single day.

Our family has always believed that genuine hospitality begins with people. Our team brings together people from Paro and across Bhutan, many of whom have grown with Zhiwaling over the years. Their knowledge, warmth and care shape every stay and offer guests a personal connection to Bhutan.

The Family Behind Zhiwaling

Zhiwaling Heritage opened in 2005 after five years in the making. Conceived and owned by a Bhutanese family, and brought to life through local craftsmanship and international expertise, it reflected a simple belief: that a luxury hotel could feel entirely at home in Bhutan.

That belief continues to guide Zhiwaling today. The family remains closely involved, working alongside a long-serving Bhutanese team and a few international colleagues whose knowledge, care and commitment continue to shape the hotel.

GROSS NATIONAL HAPPINESS: THE VALUES THAT GUIDE US

Gross National Happiness reflects Bhutan’s belief that progress should support the wellbeing of its people, culture, communities and natural environment. At Zhiwaling, these principles guide the way we do business—from caring for our team and preserving Bhutanese craftsmanship to making thoughtful choices for our community and the land around us.

Culture and Heritage

Zhiwaling was created as a living expression of Bhutanese architecture and artistry. By valuing traditional craftsmanship and the people who carry these skills forward, we help keep Bhutan’s cultural heritage part of everyday life

environmental stewardship

Our home in the Paro valley reminds us that hospitality depends on the wellbeing of the landscape around it. We aim to use resources thoughtfully, reduce our impact and care for the place we call home.

People and Community

We believe Zhiwaling’s success should be shared with the people who make it possible. We support long-term employment, learning and growth for our team while building lasting relationships within our local community.

When you arrive at Zhiwaling, you do not just observe Bhutan from a distance - you are embraced by its living soul. Every smile, every story shared by the heritage, and every hand-painted motif on our timber beams carries the living memory of Paro.

Greetings

“Kuzu zangpo la” is used to say hello throughout the day, while “Kadrin chey la” means thank you. A smile and gentle nod are always welcome.
